An Honest Review of the Most Popular Frozen Pizza Toppings

pizza-toppings

Have you ever thought about what makes a great pizza? Sure, the sauce, seasonings, and cheese play a big role in the final product. But the toppings are sort of like the icing on the cake (or pie, in this instance).

In the world of frozen pizza, all toppings are not created equal. As a general rule of thumb, we at Dogtown Pizza believe that fresher is always better. Now, you should never let anyone dictate what type of pizza toppings you enjoy, but we thought it would be fun to talk about some of the most well renowned frozen pizza toppings and why they are so popular.

Our Review of Popular Frozen Pizza Toppings

Here is an honest, inside look at the different toppings and what makes each of them great.

The Meat Review

Pepperoni

Of course, pepperoni is the classic choice. Pepperoni pizza is always a great go-to for social gatherings and family parties; this everyday favorite is unlikely to disappoint.

When it comes to the best tasting pepperoni, the question is not whether you should choose discs or diced meat. Rather, how to make sure you’ll end up with the best flavor. The secret lies largely in the quality of the meat. In that respect, keep in mind that you get what you pay for. Higher quality meat can be a bit more expensive, but your taste buds will thank you for that extra investment.

And yes, pepperoni can be one of the greasier toppings, as far as meats go. If you’re watching your weight, you might want to opt for something different. That being said, if flavor is your biggest concern– sometimes greasy is good!

Chicken

This is a meat option that is slightly unconventional, but not too crazy. For more traditional folks, chicken pairs well with pretty much any other topping. If you’re feeding picky eaters, it’s still versatile enough that you can mix and match with other ingredients to find something everyone will love.

Pro tip: If you’re hosting a viewing party for a sporting event, grab a BBQ chicken or hot wing chicken pizza and pop it in the oven. You’ll be everyone’s favorite host – especially if you get both!

Sausage

Much like pepperoni, flavorful sausage is all about quality. If you skimp and opt for a low-grade option, you will likely be disappointed.

This is true for all types, whether it be crumbled vs. chunks or Italian sausage vs. plain pork sausage.

In our expert opinion, Italian sausage is always ideal because it adds an extra layer of flavor to your pizza.

The Veggie Review

Mushrooms

They’re not for everyone, but for those who aren’t opposed to these little guys, they’re pretty amazing.  Always a “yes” in our book, mushrooms add an interesting texture and a whole new level of flavor.

Olives

You either love them, or you hate them. If you’re an olive lover, fresh olives will make a delicious addition to your frozen pizza. If you’re just dipping your toe in the water, start with a minimal amount of black olives. They’re a little more mild tasting than green olives, and they work with almost anything.

Onions

Can you think of a time where adding onion has ever been a bad idea? Yeah, neither can we.

As a pizza topping, onions should always be cooked properly. Otherwise, onions can overpower the pizza. However, adding onions to almost any type of pizza is really never a bad move.

Peppers

A crucial ingredient for any supreme pizza, peppers almost always pair well as an additional topping. For the best results, they should always be used in addition to some kind of meat or other veggies. Alone, they don’t work so well.

Again, we think you should enjoy your pizza with whatever toppings you want – popular or otherwise. We have seen people even put avocado on pizza (looking at you California). The point is that pizza is a wonderful food that should be enjoyed any way you like!
